Risk and Insurance Management Skills (RIMS) Certificate

What is a Risk and Insurance Management (RIMS) Certificate?

The RIMS Certificate recognizes an individual who is a practicing member of a profession and who has completed a series of workshops and courses on risk management. The Certificate shows:

  • Foundation Knowledge. An orientation to basic insurance and risk management topics.
  • Specialized Knowledge. Participation in workshops designed for risk managers and other risk management professionals.
  • Knowledge from Networking with Risk Professionals. Participation in programs where ideas are exchanged with other risk professionals.

What are the benefits to Holders of the RIMS Certificate?

  • Verification that an individual has pursued the skills needed to identify and manage risks in their organizations.
  • Resume Enhancement. Formal training to strengthen professional resumes.
  • Advancement Skills. Knowledge and skills that give a competitive advantage over others when pursuing salary increases and promotions.
  • Confidence. Ability to overcome weaknesses in background or knowledge in order to display greater confidence in managing risk.
  • Intellectual Renewal. Participants are exposed to current ideas in risk management thinking, problem solving and decision-making.

The Requirements

RIMS grants the Certificate to individuals who have completed the following:

  • Essentials of Risk Management and Insurance.  Completion of one college-level risk management or insurance related course, or two RIMS courses titled Fundamentals of Insurance and Techniques of Risk Management.  This requirement is waived for individuals with 10 years of work experience managing risk and working with insurance coverage.

                                      and

  • Enterprise Risk Management.  Completion of a RIMS two-day ERM workshop.

                                      and

  • Workshops.  Ten additional days of RIMS courses, workshops, or symposiums.  For listing of upcoming RIMS workshops and courses, click on Course Calendar on the left. 
    RIMS professional development courses in Spanish can be used to fulfill this requirement for the RIMS Certificate. (Los cursos de RIMS en espańol pueden ser utilizados para este requisito.)

On-line Courses:

You are able to take a maximum of six RIMS On-line courses and use to help meet the
requirements for the Risk and Insurance Management Skills (RIMS) Certificate. 
Each on-line course is equivalent to a one-day workshop.  For details about the

We suggest that you maintain a list of workshops and courses completed, including dates and locations.

Upon Completion of Requirements

Upon completion of the requirements, send the RIMS Certificate request form (click here) and a list of RIMS workshops and courses taken, including dates and locations to: Professional Development Department, Risk and Insurance Management Society, 1065 Avenue of the Americas,  New York, N.Y. 10018.  

Fulfillment of the essentials of risk management or insurance requirement:
If you completed a college-level risk management or insurance related course, please send us a copy of transcript.  If you have 10 years of working experience managing risk and working with insurance coverage, please send us a copy of your resume.

A Risk and Insurance Management Skills (RIMS) Certificate will be sent to you along with a letter of successful completion.
