Special session will help risk professionals understand the insurance implications of the devastation in Japan.

New York (April 5, 2011) — RIMS today announced its Hot Topic sessions to be presented at RIMS 2011 Annual Conference & Exhibition, May 1 - 5 in Vancouver. These special sessions include:

Insurance Implications of Japan's Devastation and its Global Impact
The extraordinary images and reports of the devastation from the Japan earthquake and tsunami are staggering. While the focus has understandably been on the concern for the well-being of the people of Japan, this session will explore the disaster’s impact on businesses globally, not the least of which involves disruptions to the global transportation network for products, component parts and supplies.

If You Must Let the Bedbugs Bite, Make Sure You're Covered
Bedbugs are an affliction as old as humanity, but new risks and insurance issues emerge with every new outbreak, including the fearsome current wave that has many major cities in its grip. Business interruptions and costly fumigations have hit not only hotels but retailers, offices of all kinds and restaurants. This session will examine policies that may be triggered by bedbug outbreaks and how to maximize claims not only for property damage but for business interruption and third-party liability.

War Zone Insurance and Risk Management
This session will discuss the risks to consider when conducting operations or sending employees to hostile territories in remote areas or emerging markets, especially Africa and Iraq, Afghanistan and the greater Middle East.

Each year, our Hot Topic sessions are designed to address the most salient issues affecting risk managers across a vast range of industries,” says Mary Roth, executive director of RIMS. “The past year has been particularly transformative for our member organizations in many ways as they have responded to political instability, the earth’s shifting plates and new business challenges. These sessions will take on these topics and help attendees adjust their strategies to respond to current conditions.”

In addition to Hot Topic sessions, the conference boasts more than 120 sessions on a variety of topics such as cyber risk, energy resources, strategic and enterprise risk management, global risk and other critical risk management issues. The conference also features keynote presentations from Apolo Anton Ohno, Olympic Gold Medalist; Stephen Dubner, co-author, FREAKONOMICS and SUPERFREAKONOMICS; and Ron Holton, Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, VP, Risk Management & Assurance Services.

Online registration for RIMS 2011 Annual Conference & Exhibition is now closed and onsite registration in Vancouver opens May 1.
