In June, RIMS announced its newest addition, the Northern Nevada chapter, located in what’s known as the “Biggest Little City in the World”—Reno. RIMS Northern Nevada Chapter offers its members a chance to meet other risk professionals who come from surrounding towns and cities, covering some 200+ miles!
“Besides the benefits of networking, regional members have the opportunity to learn the latest developments and trends that affect the risk and insurance community,” says David Cisneros, ARM, chapter president and director of risk management at International Game Technology.
“At our first meeting, we brought in Kevin Pekowsky, a managing director at Marsh, San Francisco, who discussed the current state of the property insurance market and what members can do to prepare for a successful renewal. Judging from the response we received from members, I’m sure we’ll have no problem lining up similar presentations and educational offerings in the future. We hope our meeting programming attracts more risk managers from the area.”
One might wonder, why create another chapter in Nevada when there’s already one in Las Vegas?
“Interestingly enough, most people think that everything in the state is within easy driving distance to Las Vegas, and that’s simply not true,” David is quick to point out. “In fact, Reno is actually some 400 miles from Las Vegas. Members who live in, say, Carson City or Sparks wouldn’t be up to driving to Las Vegas for a monthly meeting. Another reason is because Reno and the surrounding communities have a variety of industries, allowing us to attract new members from the academic community, healthcare institutions, gaming, government agencies and winter sporting industry.”
