2016 RIMS Legislative Summit a Success
A successful Legislative Summit was held in Washington D.C. June 6-7. More than 35 RIMS members attended from 14 states to lobby their members of Congress on RIMS legislative priorities. Attendees met with more than 60 House and Senate offices during their Congressional visits. Issues discussed were cybersecurity, captive insurers, the National Flood Insurance Program reauthorization, and a bill to curb frivolous ADA lawsuits. The keynote lunch speaker was Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

As a result of summit visits, two of the Congressional offices visited have signed on to legislation RIMS members lobbied for, and other offices have indicated their intent to sign on as well. Many attendees are also in the process of scheduling meetings with their congressional representative in their home districts.

RIMS Submits Comments on Captives
On May 31, 2016 RIMS submitted comments to the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) on a proposed rule concerning the Department of the Treasury’s implementation of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program (TRIP). The comments specifically addressed questions the FIO asked regarding captives. To read the letter click here.

RIMS Letter of Support for NRRA Legislation
On June 22, 2016 RIMS submitted a letter of support to Senator Patrick Leahy regarding the Captive Insurers Clarification Act (S.1561). This bill, which was one of the three bills attendees of the Legislative Summit discussed during their congressional visits, will remove captives from the Nonadmitted and Reinsurance Reform Act (NRRA). Senator Leahy is actively trying to include language from the bill into legislation before the end of the year.

RISK PAC Reception for Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn
Immediately following the Legislative Summit, the RISK PAC sponsored a fundraiser reception for Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). Blackburn is the sponsor of the Data Security and Breach Notification Act of 2015 which would set a national reporting standard for breach notification.
