Workshop Spotlight: Business Continuity / Disaster Planning and Management

With the increasing threats of natural disasters, terrorism, pandemics and supply chain interruptions--and on the radar screen of the C-suite--business continuity and disaster recovery planning and maintenance have never been more important. RIMS recognizes that this topic is a critical element of risk programs and to the practitioners who manage them. At RIMS 2008 Annual Conference & Exhibition, three courses on business continuity and disaster planning and management were held. Since the topic is also relevant to Enterprise Risk Management strategies, RIMS ERM Center of Excellence has numerous papers, studies and articles that cover it in detail. But that's not all RIMS has done to provide you with the latest business continuity tactics. RIMS has teamed with Michael Keating, director of business continuity management at Navigant Consulting, to offer a workshop on Business Continuity / Disaster Planning and Management on October 21-22 in Chicago.

Government Affairs Update
Request Congress to review legislation that will affect your business environment

RIMS is working with key members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs to change the definition of a 'qualified risk manager' in S.B. 929: the Nonadmitted and Reinsurance Reform Act to encompass all of the risk managers who are members of the Society. This month, we're asking RIMS members to send a letter to their Congressional member on the Senate Banking Committee urging them to conduct a hearing on the legislation. UPDATE: Legislation on the Move
House subcommittee tackles insurance issues to promote accessibility and affordability

Early this month, the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises marked up legislation that are priorities for insurance buyers and risk managers--the Insurance Information Act and the Increasing Insurance Coverage Options for Consumers Act. The bills were hot topics at RIMS on the Hill legislative conference where RIMS members met with members of Congress and staff to lobby for both bills in June 2008. Read the article here.
