RIMS ON THE HILL: Tallahassee, Florida -- January 2012 1/18/2012


On January 11, 2012, RIMS (the Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc.) held its RIMS on the Hill program in Tallahassee, Florida. The conference brought together members from four Florida-based RIMS Chapters -- The Broward County Chapter, Central Florida Chapter, North Florida Chapter and the Palm Beach County Chapter – and provided them with the opportunity to meet face-to-face with local legislators to discuss the most significant risk management issues affecting both the private and public sectors.

The meeting in Tallahassee focused on a wide-range of legislation that included RIMS support for:

·     HB151 (Steinberg & Frishe) / SB196 (Altman) – Child safety devices in motor vehicles;

·     HB299 (Pilon) / SB416 (Detert) – Florida ban on texting while driving law;

·     HB365 (Costello & Julien) / SB910 (Hays) – Revises conditions under which certain special risk employees who suffer or have died from specified medical conditions are presumed to have been injured or killed accidentally & in the line of duty;

·     HB427 (Passidomo) / SB1224 (Oelrich) – Civil remedies against insurers;

·     HB511 (Hudson) / SB668 (Hays) – Workers’ compensation medical services for repackaged or relabeled perscriptions;

·     HB1069 (Metz) / SB1328 (Hays)  - Damages for medical or health care services;

·     HB1087 (Berman) / SB1340 (Sachs) – Concealed weapons or firearms.


Legislation reviewed at the meetings and opposed by RIMS included:

·     HB4077 (Metz) / SB 1268 (Simmons) – Action for damages;

·     HB4177 (Plakon / SB TBD – Traffic infraction detectors.

The expanded regional RIMS on the Hill events are part of a strategic initiative to expand the scope of RIMS’ foothold in legislative and regulatory matters in addition to RISK PAC, which was created in 2011. RIMS will continue to be a watchful advocate on the national front, but will also dedicate resources to its regional RIMS on the Hill events in coming years.
