Meet the Education Aficionado
Shannon Crowder is the Risk Manager at Coast Electric Power Association. She has successfully used the educational resources available at RIMS to advance her skills and manage risk through an enterprise risk management (ERM) approach at her organization.
I work for a member-owned, rural electric cooperative in Mississippi and enterprise risk management programs are a relatively new frontier for us. With my accounting and finance background, I was already skilled at managing risks in that respect. However, I had no real experience with entity-wide risk management. That’s when I decided to attend an enterprise-wide risk management workshop offered by RIMS. And, I’m glad I did. The course was extremely valuable and gave me the knowledge necessary to take our ERM program from theory to practice.
The expertise that I gained was also very useful once I transitioned to the position of Risk Manager in 2012. In that time, I wrote an ERM manual for internal distribution within my organization. We identified and assessed our association-level risks and began our mitigation process. I developed formal mitigation forms for risk owners and compiled all of the information into an easy to use risk “register” for our Board of Directors.
Our organization, like most, is also faced with threats to our cyber security. So, I again utilized RIMS educational offerings to get up to speed on how to best protect my organization. I attended a cyber risk and liability workshop and learned practical solutions that I was able to apply right away. This included working closely with our Human Resources and Information Technology departments to create an updated IT policy that provides greater protection to our company and our members.
All in all, my RIMS membership has allowed me to take my career to the next level and to provide a valuable and much needed service to my organization.
