Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation

The Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation is a widely recognized qualification that provides risk managers a foundation of knowledge and skills needed to identify, assess, monitor and limit risks. The CRM is recognized by the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) and awarded by the Global Risk Management Institute (GRMI).

Attaining the CRM designation demonstrates a level of professional commitment, knowledge and skills that employers in both public and private sectors recognize.

Steps for Attaining the CRM designation

Step 1: Create an online profile here.
Step 2: Enroll in each course at a university or institution that offers the required CRM courses listed below.
Step 3: Mail a copy of your grade report from the university/institution along with the testing and processing fee of $125 (CAN), for each of the three courses, in the form of a cheque made payable to GRMI. GRMI will issue testing center location options​ and access instructions via email for the course exam.
Step 4: Once the candidate receives a passing score on all three exams, GRMI will issue a CRM designation completion certificate.

CRM Courses

To acquire the CRM designation, candidates need to notify GRMI after completion of one of the three CRM courses through one of the below listed CRM Course Providers.

Note: Course tuition varies from one institution to another, and is independent of fees paid to GRMI.



Continued Standing

In order to maintain your CRM designation, membership in GRMI must remain current. To renew and continue your membership, you must submit your annual dues payment of $50 (USD).

Although the CRM does not require continuing education credits, all GRMI members will receive an annual $100 rebate when they attend a RIMS in-person workshop to further their professional development. Visit for more information.


CRM-E Designation

If you hold the CRM designation and complete the RIMS Enterprise Risk Management workshop, you are eligible to take the CRM-E Online Examination in order to obtain your CRM-E designation.

The exam is based on the textbook, Enterprise Risk Management, published by the Institutes. Details and access information on the CRM-E Online Examination will be sent to you upon completion of the three-day workshop.



The Global Risk Management Institute, Inc. (GRMI) is an institute that issues the CRM and is an alumni association of individuals who hold the Canadian Risk Management (CRM) and RIMS Fellow (RF) designations.
