What’s New at RIMS Interview with Carol Fox, Director of Strategic
and Enterprise Risk Practice

How does the focus on Strategic and Enterprise Risk Practice affect RIMS members?

Traditionally, many organizations expect risk management to play a very tactical and limited role. For example, just prevent and mitigate risks through controls or transfer known risks contractually or through insurance products. But that underestimates the role risk practitioners can play in increasing the odds of an organization’s strategic success. In RIMS 2010 Excellence in Risk Management report, conducted jointly with Marsh, we found that adoption of an enterprise risk management program had increased significantly - from 9% to 28% - in 2009-10 but is still not the norm for most organizations. What are the next steps for Strategic and Enterprise Risk Practice and how can members stay informed?

RIMS filled a market need in developing practical ERM tools and practices through its ERM Committee over the past eight years. The Strategic and Enterprise Risk Practice aims to accelerate this mission. While the practice itself is in an “emerging” stage, RIMS - through its ERM Committee and Professional Development group - has created a great foundation.
