RIMS on the Hill 2009

On day two, RIMS members David Dolnick, risk manager at the Brady Companies; Zareen Chaudhry, risk analyst at Allergan Inc.; and Wendy Macy, associate general counsel at the Los Angeles Unified School District, discuss RIMS agenda with Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and legislative assistant Elyse Derian.

More than 60 members of RIMS gathered for the 11th annual RIMS on the Hill Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., on June 7-9. This year's event focused on legislation affecting the price of commercial property casualty insurance, financial regulatory restructuring and the optional federal charter.

Donna Brazile, nationally syndicated columnist and regular contributor to CNN, ABC News and National Public Radio, spoke with RIMS members after the keynote luncheon.

The first day of the RIMS on the Hill program was focused on educating attendees on the issues to effectively lobby their members of Congress. For many participants, this was their first year attending RIMS on the Hill, and they found the event to be very beneficial. For others this was a chance to further refine their lobbying skills and to gain greater insights into the legislative issues affecting their business. The two panel sessions allowed members to gain insight into the policy and political arguments surrounding RIMS' issues.

Rep. Melissa Bean, D-Ill., member of the House Financial Services Committee and the lead Democratic sponsor to create a federal insurance charter, spoke to RIMS members at the 11th annual RIMS on the Hill Legislative Conference.

Day one highlights include:

  • Donna Brazile, nationally syndicated columnist and regular contributor to CNN, ABC News and National Public Radio, delivered the keynote luncheon address. She discussed anecdotes about previous campaigns to reflections on New Orleans post-Katrina.
  • Rep. Melissa L. Bean, D-Ill, discussed her legislation on greater federal regulation of insurance and the political climate surrounding the larger debate over federal financial modernization.
  • Lobbyists from the American Bankers Insurance Association, Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers, Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers and Reinsurance Association of America, spoke about regulatory modernization using panel discussions to brief RIMS members in preparation for their congressional visits.
  • Lobbying Techniques from A-Z were given by RIMS staff members on how to lobby effectively and what to do/not do while on Capitol Hill.
  • Lobbying delegation strategy session.

On day two, RIMS members met with their representatives to discuss RIMS agenda. Topping RIMS agenda were several legislative initiatives permitting a greater federal role on insurance regulation.
