NEW YORK (June 22, 2009) â The Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) and International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI) have teamed up to offer the Management Liability Insurance Specialist (MLISâ¢) program for risk managers who want to enhance their skills in directors and officers (D&O), employment practices liability (EPL), fiduciary and other professional liability practices. The seven-course online program is available at
www.RIMS.org/MLIS for an introductory rate of $69 per course. RIMS members receive a 10 percent discount.
The MLIS⢠program is divided into two parts. Part one includes three basic- to intermediate-level courses that cover the fundamentals of professional, errors and omissions (E&O), and D&O liability insurance. Part two comprises four courses that focus on the specific nuances of D&O liability, EPL and fiduciary liability exposures and insurance. Participants can enroll in the online courses at any time and take the exams at their convenience.
"The knowledge that risk practitioners gain from the MLIS⢠program will help them better understand the underwriting and pricing process for the executive lines of insurance and become smarter insurance buyers," says W. Michael McDonald, ARM, member of RIMS board of directors and vice president of risk management at Quality Distribution, Inc.
"Since standard D&O, E&O, EPL and other professional liability policy forms are not used in the marketplace, there is considerable variation from one insurer's policy forms to another'sâmaking these perhaps the most complex lines of insurance and prone to embarrassing, and costly, coverage gaps," says Jack P. Gibson, CPCU, ARM, IRMI president. "The new MLIS⢠program offers risk professionals convenient and affordable access to high quality courses that will enable them to ensure their policies provide the broad coverage that their directors, officers and managers expect."
After completing the seven courses, participants receive the MLIS⢠certification, which is valid for 24 months. Thereafter, participants must complete three hours of approved continuing education credits on an annual basis to maintain the certification.
After January 1, 2010, each course will cost $79. For an additional $15 per course, participants may secure insurance continuing education credits in most states.
