Director
W. Michael McDonald (Mike) is the Vice President of Risk Management for Quality Distribution, Inc. the largest bulk transporter of chemicals in North America, with a fleet of 3,500 vehicles. He has specific responsibility for overseeing Property/Casualty, Claims, Environmental Emergency Response, and Independent Contractor Insurance programs for its worldwide operations.
In 1966, Mr. McDonald began his career serving for the first ten years in various positions at Instrument Systems Corporation, Richardson-Merrill, Inc., Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company with responsibilities in insurance underwriting and corporate risk management. In 1976, he joined United Technologies Corporation/Otis Elevator Company as international/corporate risk manager. Mr. McDonald relocated to Florida in 1986 and joined Ryder System as group director, risk management, and president of their claims subsidiary, Ryder Services Corporation. In 1991, he joined Homeowners Marketing Services, Inc. as vice president, risk management. From 1994 to 1997, he served as director, risk management for Value Rent-A-Car, and in the same capacity for Walter Industries from 1997 until 2002, when he took a position as Director of Risk Management for Danka Business Systems, PLC. During 2005, he joined his current employer.
Currently a member of the RIMS Tampa Bay chapter, Mr. McDonald has served as President for the Connecticut Valley, South Florida and Broward chapters, and as a Director of the New York Chapter. Mr. McDonald has served as chair of the international cooperation committee and was the original chair of the Risk Management Roundtable. He has served on the conference and industry liaison committees. Mr. McDonald was the first chair of the Singapore Risk Management Conference and served as co-chair of the Monte Carlo Risk Management Conference. From 1994 to 1998 he served on the Florida Regional Conference Committee and was a member of the governance committee and the Goodell award committee. Elected to the Executive Council in 1999, Mr. McDonald served as Vice President - Conferences, 2001-2002 and served as Vice President - Long Range Planning & Research, and Vice President-Governance in previous years.
Mr. McDonald has also served as a speaker/moderator at numerous national, regional and local RIMS meetings. He received his bachelors degree from North Carolina State University and earned the Associate in Risk Management designation from the Insurance Institute of America.
